about AL

The American Legion (AL) was charted by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veteran organization. Focusing on service to veterans, service members and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States.  Membership rapidly grew to over 1 million, and local posts emerged across the country.  Today, membership stands at approximately 2 million in 12,000 post worldwide.  Post are located in each state, District of Columbia, U.S. Territories, France, Mexico, Philippines and the United Kingdom.

about
SfC Gantt

Army SFC Joseph E. Gantt went missing in action in late 1950, during the Korean War.  SFC Gantt was a member of the 503rd Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd infantry Division.  The Division was involved in heavy fighting with Chinese forces north and east of the town of Kunu-RI, North Korea, and on November 30, began a fighting withdrawal to the south.  Before they could disengage, the Division was forced to fight a series of Chinese roadblocks and SFC Gantt was among many men reported missing that day in the vicinity of Somindong, North Korea.

In 1953, returning American soldiers who had been held as prisoners of war reported that SFC Gantt had been captured by Chinese forces on November 30, 1950, and died of malnutrition in March or April 1951, in a prisoner of war camp.

SFC Gantt remains were returned to the U.S. and DNA identified with matched SFC Gantt's cousins.  SFC Gantt remains were returned to his widow for burial and laid to rest with full military honors on December 28, 2013, at Inglewood Park Cemetery.

Early 2014, with Mrs. Clara Gantt blessing, "Joseph E. Gantt, Post #290" was formed.

American Legion, Joseph E. Gantt, Post #290 will honor and never forget those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
